The YHIS Weekend Chinese Program is designed with you and your children in mind using the International Baccalaureate curriculum and STARTALK Program Framework. This weekend program, which is an hour and a half in length, aims to immerse learners in the Chinese language and culture, in a way that is applicable to their every day experience. Learners will be assessed based on their communication, listening, comprehension abilities and then additionally their writing skills according to age and language proficiency level.  
 
The theme for the year will be "A Trip to China".  
 
For Fall 2020 to June 2021, there will be 28 sessions:
  • October 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st
  • November 7th, 14th
  • November 21st (makeup day if needed)
  • December 5th, 12th, 19th
  • January 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th
  • February 6 (makeup day if needed)
  • February 20th, 27th
  • March 6th, 13th, 20th
  • April 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th
  • May 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd
  • June 6th
  • June 13th (makeup day if needed) 
 
Classes:
  • Ages 4 - 6 (onsite 10-11:30am)
  • Ages 7 - 10 (onsite 10-11:30am)
  • Adult Classes (onsite 10-11:30am)
  • AP Chinese (flexible depending on availability of learners, e.g. weekends 4:30-6pm)
 
The class for students ages 4 - 6 will include but will not be limited to songs, dances and hands-on Chinese cultural activities incorporating Science, Math, Arts and Crafts and Chinese Language related to the theme.
 
The class for students ages 7 - 10 includes all of the activities that the age 4 - 6 class does in addition to writing, reading comprehension and presentation skills partnered with online learning.
 
The Adult class topics will include but again, are not limited to, greetings, topics pertaining to doing business in China, Geography, the weather and more, through face-to-face learning partnered with online learning.
 
The AP Chinese course will be designed to prepare learners for their AP Chinese assessment. 
 
Due to the rigor and language acquisition needed of the Maliping program, this YHIS program will not rely on those materials primarily and will rely instead on other top quality resources better matched to the level of language acquisition possible in a non immersion weekend model. Maliping will be used as a supplement when applicable.  
 
Cost:
  • Adults: $280 for 7 sessions or $1,120 for 28 sessions
  • Ages 4 - 6, 7-10 yr. olds: $700 for 28 sessions (10% sibling discount)
  • AP Chinese $1000 for 28 sessions
*Students MUST attend all 28 sessions
